साधारण छोटी शिष्टतायें या शिष्टतापूर्ण व्यवहार जीवन के परिवर्तन का आधार बनती है। सच पूछा जाय तो अच्छे व्यवहार की शिक्षा हमें स्वयं से प्राप्त होती है।
यदि हम समझदार हैं, तो अपना ही अनुभव हमें इस स्वप्राप्त शिक्षा प्रदान कर देगा। यह शिक्षा किसी स्कूल-कॉलेज या पुस्तक से इतनी अच्छी तरह नहीं सीखी जा सकती, जितनी कि स्वयं की बुद्धि से।
सर्वप्रथम आप अच्छे श्रोता बनिये। हर मनुष्य अपनी ही कहना चाहता है, कोई किसी की बात सुनना नहीं चाहता।
आप पहले समझदारी से, दिल के साथ उसकी पूरी बात सुन तो लीजिये, उसे सब कुछ कह तो लेने दीजिये, उसे अपना हृदय तो हल्का कर लेने दीजिये, फिर तो वह व्यक्ति आपका बिना मोल का गुलाम हो जायेगा और तब आप उससे चाहे जो कुछ कहेंगे, वह ध्यान और प्रेम से आपकी बातें सुनेगा और मानेगा।
उसी प्रकार आप दूसरों की सम्मति का भी आदर कीजिये। कुछ लोग दूसरों की सम्मति सुनना ही नहीं चाहते। आपको उस व्यक्ति से मतभेद हो सकता है, पर आप में सहनशीलता तो होनी ही चाहिये।
“सुनें सबकी- करें मन की” उक्ति में भी यही बात बताई गई है। आपको विरोध ही, मत-भेद ही प्रकट करना है, तो खूबसूरती से, मिठास से, समझदारी से प्रकट करना चाहिये, यह तो आपके हाथ में है।
अपने सिद्धान्तों और सम्मतियों पर दृढ़ता के साथ स्थिर रहना बुरा नहीं है, लेकिन यह काम विनम्रता और प्रेमपूर्वक भी किया जा सकता है, न कि जोर-जबरदस्ती, लड़-झगड़ कर, गालियों के बल पर।
दूसरों की भावनाओं का ध्यान रखते हुए हम उसके निकट पहुँच सकते हैं। उसकी आत्मीयता के कारण हम उसके वास्तविक, सच्चे स्वरूप को पहचानने में अधिक समर्थ होंगे।
विनम्र, दयालु, श्रेष्ठ, परोपकारी होने में हमें कौन सा पैसा खर्च करना पड़ता है? केवल इच्छा मात्र की आवश्यकता है। मनुष्य के चरित्र की सबसे बड़ी परीक्षा इसी के द्वारा सम्भव है, कि उसका व्यवहार दूसरों के प्रति कैसा होता है?
गरीब-अमीर, मूर्ख, राजा, पुरोहित, व्यापारी, विद्यार्थी, स्त्री-पुरुष, बालक-वृद्ध, युवा सभी के लिए यह सुगम है, कि वे सरल, सरस, सहानुभूतिपूर्ण सच्चा और खुला हुआ हृदय सबके लिए रखें।
यह ईश्वरीय वरदान है। जो दूसरों की भावनाओं का ध्यान रखना चाहते हैं, उनमें यह गुण स्वतः ही आ जाते हैं।
